According to the National Association of Realtor's 2015 Home Buyers and Sellers Profile report, a typical house sold by the homeowner (FSBO) had a median sale price of $210,000 but working with a professional real estate agent it sells for $249,000.  This doesn’t mean that an agent can get $39,000 more for your home as studies have shown that people are more likely to FSBO in markets with lower price points.  However, it does show that selling on your own might not make sense.  Do the math, if a professional real estate agent is making 6% commission (just under $15,000) it becomes obvious that working with an agent pays for itself.
